Present & Pleased Devotional DAY THIRTYNINE

"The people of Israel mourned for Moses on the plains of Moab for thirty days, until the customary period of mourning was over. Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him, doing just as the Lord had commanded Moses." Deuteronomy 34:8 – 9

I’m certainly not Moses. But when I leave Central on May 23, I hope you have a period of mourning, lots of crying and wailing for at least 30 days, six months, maybe a year. :) But then go on. We’re not to build on one person. This church doesn’t revolve around one person.

In the book, Too Great a Temptation, Joel Gregory tells how W.A. Criswell, 80-year-old pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, picked him to be the successor. Criswell said he’d step aside, brought Gregory on staff, but Criswell couldn’t pull the trigger; he kept hanging on. There was big conflict between the two pastors; the younger man left. Part of the problem was a great preacher wouldn’t step aside. It was “too great a temptation.”

One of the big reasons Central is a growing and alive church is because Howard Kraps prepared the way for me. I want to do the same for Jon Henninger, who will follow me. Howard laid the foundation. This church is not about me or any one person. It’s about Jesus; it’s His church.

"No one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ."
1 Corinthians 3:11

Well said Pastor Jamie. I have enjoyed your hard core, honest, and to the point sermons, and your stories, as well as, your jokes.😂 You will be missed, and I know Jon will do great leading Jesus’ church throughout the next several years. Many prayers and wishes for you and your family through this next adventure of your life.🎉
