Do you have trouble keeping this Christmas season focused on the spiritual?

Read Luke 2:8-16. Jamie uses this passage to discuss the common methods and jobs of the shepherds around Jerusalem. He also compares our form of communication with those of the shepherds. Spend a couple of minutes discussing how much this church has been a blessing in your life. What first brought you to Central? What do you appreciate the most?

Read Luke 12:15 & Matthew 16:26. What is the battle between the spiritual and material like in your own life? How have you worked to tip the scales in the healthier direction?

The shepherds made a clear choice for the spiritual. Read Matthew 6:24. Jamie said, “I think there are a lot of people filling pews in churches who never make a decision about what they really want.” Discuss this quote with the group, do you agree/disagree?

The shepherds got out of their comfort zone and looked for Jesus. Read Colossians 3:1-4. Are there some “traditions” in your life that lean more toward the material that you need to eliminate? If you choose to move away from them, what could you replace them with?

The shepherds talked about things that mattered. Read Luke 2:17-18. Is it hard for you to strike up a spiritual conversation? Who are the people in your life where it is the hardest: spouse, children, parents?

The shepherds went back to work with a different attitude. Read Luke 2:20 & Philippians 3:7-9. What stands out to you in these passages? How do they relate?

Christmas can cause major conflicts for many of us. Maybe this Christmas is particularly difficult. Use this last group time, before the holidays, to lean on and pray for one other. Even brainstorm what your group could do to avoid the material and focus more on the spiritual.

LifeGroupNotes will take a break for the holidays.

Merry Christmas and see you next year with a brand-new series, Restart.”
